Collin County Aggie Moms

First general meeting scheduled for Sept. 21

Our club's first general meeting for the new school year will be held virtually on Mon., Sept. 21, at 7:00 p.m. Mark your calendar and be on the lookout for information on how to register for the event and receive the Zoom link.

Andy Duffie '78 will be the guest speaker and will discuss his Century Tree Endowed Scholarships. He grows trees from the acorns of the famous tree located at the heart of campus.

Our club has partnered with the Brazos County Mothers Against Drunk Driving to donate a tree to the family of Carly Beatty, an A&M student who was the victim of a hit and run accident last year. Her mom was one of our club members.

For every tree he sells, Andy will donate $20 to our organization, and we are hoping to be able to pay our portion of the Beatty family donation with money from trees purchased by our members.

Bio for Andy Duffie '78

Andy is probably best known as the Former Student who heads up the Aggie Century Tree Project.

He harvests acorns from the Century Tree on campus, grows them into seedlings in his back yard, and sells the little trees to Aggies across Texas and the southern U.S. to plant in their yards or on their properties.

He uses the tree sales proceeds to fund Texas A&M scholarships. His project has funded a President’s Endowed Scholarship ($100,000), an Aggie Ring Scholarship ($25,000), and a Sul Ross Scholarship ($25,000) benefitting the Corps of Cadets. Andy’s next endeavor is a $25,000 Study Abroad endowed scholarship.

As a student at Texas A&M, Andy served as president of his senior class, served on Corps Staff, was a Ross Volunteer, and was active in many student organizations.

After graduation, he spent two years with Procter & Gamble in the Houston market as a sales rep, then returned to his hometown of Vernon, TX to assume the management and ownership role in a family business for the next 33 years.

Andy and his wife Connie retired to College Station five years ago where he continues to operate his backyard tree nursery and scholarship fundraising efforts.

Andy has almost 40 years of active leadership experience in Texas A&M clubs and currently serves as a Class Agent for his Class of ’78. He enjoys speaking to Texas A&M organizations on campus and statewide.

Andy and Connie have two Aggie daughters – Andrea ’08 and Laura ’12.

We will have a start-up meeting after our first general meeting.

Please contact Kathy Terzis at CCAMFundraiser@aggienetwork.com if you would like to join this committee.

Greetings from On-Campus Health Center

Howdy, Aggie Moms!

As a parent, we understand that you may be more concerned about the health and safety of your college student during the pandemic. At Texas A&M Student Health Services (SHS), we want you to know that we will continue to provide your student with the best care possible, regardless if they are on-campus in College Station, or taking online classes. We were there for them before COVID-19, and we will be there for them now.

To help ease the concern regarding available healthcare options for your student, we wanted to provide a brief overview of the services we have for your student.

  • Our Medical Clinic offers a wide range of services, such as diagnosis and treatment for allergies, cold, flu, and other respiratory infections; strains and sprains; depression and anxiety; general and activity physicals; women’s health related issues and more.

·SHS now offers telemedicine services for students that allows them to consult with a clinician from the comfort of their home. To utilize telemedicine services, students must be currently enrolled as well as physically located in the state of Texas. These appointments can be held via phone call or Zoom.

  • Our Pharmacy is available to fill/refill prescriptions as well as provide affordable over-the counter (OTC)  medications. SHS now offers an online OTC medication ordering system available for students who are on campus as well as those studying remote this year. Visit the pharmacy webpage to access the order form: https://shs.tamu.edu/pharmacy.

For more information on all available services, please visit our website. To schedule an in-person or telemedicine appointment, visit shs.tamu.edu/appointments.

COVID Testing

There are a variety of COVID tests available for your student on campus.

  • TAMU-funded COVID tests: The COVID-19 tests are funded by Texas A&M University and provided by Curative, Inc. These tests are PCR tests (to determine an active COVID-19 infection), are collected via mouth swab, and are available to students, faculty and staff. This test is only designed to provide the individual with their mouth swab test result.
  • SHS COVID tests: SHS offers two different types of COVID tests available to students, faculty and staff:
    • An antibody blood/serology test to determine the likelihood of a previous COVID-19 infection.
    • A nasal swab/PCR to determine an active COVID-19 infection.

The SHS COVID tests are available to all students, faculty and staff, and insurance will be billed for these tests. Insurance may cover the cost in full, but it is encouraged to check with your insurance provider before scheduling the test. An SHS medical provider will follow up with the patient and assist in his/her care before and after results are available, and will be able to answer any questions the individual may have regarding COVID-19. If a student does not have health insurance, CARES Act funding may be available to cover the cost of the COVID test.

For updates on COVID-19 and University procedures, visit COVID-19 Guidance on the TAMU website for more information.

Student Health Services is open Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm and is located on Military Walk, across All Faiths Chapel and Sbisa.

Stay up to date and follow us on social media! Please submit any questions or concerns on our contact page.

Thanks and Gig ‘em!
